We welcome the government’s focus on easing the cost of living and strengthening Medicare. We know cost is one of the biggest barriers preventing young people from accessing the mental health care they deserve - with 60% of young people aged 18–24 identifying cost as a significant barrier in 2024*. Measures like increased bulk billing incentives, cheaper medicines under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, and a 20% reduction in student debt will have a meaningful impact.
Our community of young people had shared their hopes with us ahead of this year’s Federal Budget. They were eager to see meaningful investment in prevention and early intervention - recognising that these are the foundations for a mentally healthy generation.
The primary mental health announcement came in the form of continued funding of $46 million over four years from 2024–25 to continue digital mental health services. We value the critical work in making sure mental health support are available when and where it’s needed, and are glad to see that commitment continue.
We also know there is more that needs to be done if we’re to turn things around for young people in Australia. We’re facing a youth mental health crisis, and with the Federal Election on the horizon, batyr will continue advocating for young Australians, making sure their voices are heard and their experiences are central in government decision making.
As we look ahead, we’re ready to work with the next government to ensure young people’s voices are central to mental health reform and ensure that all young Australians have the support they need to thrive.
