5 Ways to Help a Mate Open Up About Mental Health, thanks to MOOD Tea

July 25, 2025

Checking in with a friend who might be struggling can feel awkward or overwhelming. You might worry about saying the wrong thing, or not knowing how to help. But you don’t need to be an expert to make a real difference - just showing up and starting the conversation can go a long way.

At batyr, we know that a simple check-in can have a powerful impact. Whether it’s over a walk, a text, or a cup of tea, creating space to talk about how we’re really going can help break down the stigma around mental ill-health and build stronger, more supportive communities.

Here are five practical ways to help a mate feel safe and supported when talking about their mental health:

1. Pick the right moment

Not every moment is the right one for a deep chat - and that’s okay. Look for a time when you're both relatively relaxed and not rushed. Sometimes the best chats happen when you’re not sitting face to face,  like when walking the dog, driving somewhere, or having a quiet cuppa - these moments give people space to talk without the pressure of direct eye contact. Try bringing it up during something low-key and familiar.

2. Start small and be genuine

Start with something open-ended and non-confrontational to let them know you care. A big, serious question can feel daunting, so instead, try easing in with something more casual:

  • “You’ve seemed a bit quiet lately - how’s everything going?”
  • “How’s your week been, really?”
  • “What’s been on your mind lately?”

If they give a short answer like “I’m fine” but you sense there’s more going on, gently invite them to share more without pushing.

If they open up;

If your friend starts to share, remember - your role is to listen. You don’t need to fix anything or give advice unless they ask for it. Sometimes a simple “That sounds really hard” or “Thanks for telling me” is enough. You could also ask:

  • “Do you want to talk more about it?”
  • “Would it help to chat to someone else about this - like a counsellor or GP?”
  • “What do you need from me right now - just a vent, or some help figuring things out?”

If they’re not ready;

Sometimes, people aren’t ready to talk, and that’s okay too. Let them know you’re there whenever they are. You might say:

  • “That’s alright, I just wanted you to know I’m here.”
  • “No pressure - if you ever feel like chatting, I’m around.”
  • “Thanks for listening anyway. I’m always up for a tea and a catch-up when you’re keen.”
3. Listen more than you talk

Once they open up, let them lead the conversation. Avoid jumping straight to advice. Instead, focus on listening without judgement. You can say things like:

  • “That sounds really tough.”
  • “I’m really glad you told me.”
  • “Thanks for being honest with me.”

These simple affirmations let your mate know it’s safe to keep talking.

4. Don't rush the outcome

Sometimes a check-in won’t lead to a deep and meaningful chat, and that’s okay. What matters is that you’ve planted the seed. Keep the door open with kindness and consistency, and don’t take it personally if they’re not ready to talk yet. Remember, checking in isn’t a one-time thing. Whether it’s a text tomorrow or catching up again next week, staying connected shows you care and builds trust.

5. Know where to point them for support

You don’t have to fix everything - just knowing where to turn next is enough. Encourage them to speak to a GP, a school counsellor, or recommend they check out some of the mental health support services listed here. Making space one cup at a time

Sometimes, the most powerful check-ins happen over something simple - like a shared cup of tea. That’s part of why we’re so proud to be supported by MOOD Tea, a social enterprise on a mission to tackle youth mental health with every brew.

In a world-first collaboration, MOOD Tea was created in 2021 by more than 100 companies from the media, marketing and advertising industries, with the support of social purpose organisation UnLtd.

Thanks to MOOD Tea’s support, more than 9,100 young people across Australia have participated in mental health education.

Recently, our team delivered a batyr@school program to Year 12 students in Queensland. After the session 74% of students said the lived experience stories shared were powerful, and 73% said they felt more confident to support someone experiencing mental ill-health.

By turning everyday rituals into acts of care, MOOD Tea is helping to foster connection and shift the narrative around mental health while funding the programs that support young people. Next time you brew a cup, take a moment to check in with a friend, a colleague, or a young person in your life. It doesn’t have to be a big conversation to make a big difference.

Whether you're after a calming herbal brew or a bold English breakfast pick-me-up, there's a MOOD Tea for wherever you're at. It’s tea that’s good for you and the planet:

  • Biodegradable and home compostable tea bags
  • Vegan and vegetarian friendly
  • Aussie-owned and made

You can grab MOOD's award-winning tea in-store at Woolworths, shop online, or even subscribe to keep your office stocked with brews that support batyr. Check out more brands like MOOD that support batyr here.
