7 September 2020, ACT, Australia – Around 80 ANU students will journey from Civic Canberra to Bong Bong Racecourse on 11-12 September in the 10th annual Civic2Surf.
The initiative, led by Australian National University (ANU) students, is dedicated to smashing the stigma of mental health, with all money raised going to youth mental health organisation batyr. The run was launched 10 years ago and helped to kickstart batyr.
C2S president Isabella Davies said she has seen the effects of large scale devastation on her community over 2020.
“From bushfires, to droughts, to a global pandemic, now, more than ever before, Australia’s youth need to know that they aren’t alone; that the negative voices in their heads are not there to stay, and that it is okay not to be okay,” Isabella said.
“The 2020 Civic2Surf Community wants to spread a positive word of encouragement to those around the ACT and Southern Highlands by supporting the work of batyr, which helps to bring communities together in a positive way.”
Between 60-80 ANU students and members of the local community are expected to take part in the 2-day relay this year, which is traditionally run as a 340km relay from ACT to Bondi. To meet COVID-19 safe measures, the route has been changed so the relay remains in Canberra but the goal of the relay remains the same.
C2S are hoping to raise $20,000 for batyr, which will allow us to continue to deliver our Being Herd programs. The two-day workshop brings together a small group of young people (aged 18-30) to learn how to confidently share their lived experience with mental ill-health or what it’s been like supporting someone else.
“batyr are so grateful for the ongoing support from the Civic2Surf committee, fundraisers and donors – for this event to go ahead despite the lockdown is incredible and is a testament to the resilience and hard work of the ANU committee,” batyr CEO Nic Brown.
“This year’s event is a time to reflect on the past 10 years and a reminder, this year more than ever, to look out for one another in such a changing environment.”
