Ben, one of our awesome batyr speakers based in Sydney shines some light on how music has been there to help him through the tougher times.
Music has always been a big part of my life. I grew up playing various instruments and still love to play bass and acoustic guitar to unwind. A big part of recovery and resilience against mental ill health for me is mindfulness. Whenever I feel my headspace starting to head south I know I need to engage in mindfulness skills and become present in the moment, something therapy has taught me. Whilst mindfulness can encompass a large range of activities from meditating to exercise I find that listening to music is an easy way to get my mental ill-health back under control.
I do this by closing my eyes and observing every aspect of the music, from the lyrics to the drumbeat, to the rhythm guitar. This connection with music allows me to disconnect from whatever it is that has made my head run a muck and centre myself back in the present moment. Due to this, I decided to make myself a playlist of positive, uplifting songs. I also chose to reach out to others via social media to see what songs they listened to when struggling with a difficult head. I have learnt that connecting and sharing strategies against mental ill health is the best way to smash the stigma and not only help others but help myself.
Now, whenever I feel myself struggling with mental ill-health or my head playing tricks on me I am able to pull out my headphones and mindfully listen to the music that helps not only myself but others when times are tough.
Some of my all time favourite songs to listen to when struggling with mental ill-health are:
